Abstract:

A two-year pilot phase for the Australian National Placename Survey is being sponsored by the Australian Academy of the Humanities at Macquarie University's Dictionary Research Centre.

The Survey will build on the work of the Committee for Geographical Names in Australasia, which is concerned largely with mapping and standardisation, by adding a historical and linguistic dimension. Our aim is to collect together all that is known or can be discovered about the circumstances and motivation behind the naming of every place in Australia.

It is envisaged that the primary resource created will be a database able to be accessed via the Web, but a number of static products, both electronic and paper, will also be published. The study of placenames is a completely new field of scholarly research in Australia, and the work of the survey will extend over many decades to come.
