Abstract:
It normally does not cause any problem to translate a person name between languages of alphabetic system: it could be kept intact in the target language. However, when translated into Chinese, the name must be transliterated into a pictographic system, specifically Chinese characters. To show how transliteration is done, and what principles should be followed, I will take a name transliteration system FORNATRA (Foreign Name Translation system) as an example.
FORNATRA intends to serve as a standard for the transliteration of foreign names into Chinese, thus clearing up the long-time chaotic situation in the name translation history. FORNATRA is currently capable of translating person names of English, French and German into Chinese, which can be annotated and stored in the database which can then be searched or modified by using the retrieval component of FORNATRA.Enquiries: sals@mri.mq.edu.au
