Abstract:
A framework for conceptualising external representations (ERs) and their utility in various contexts will be introduced and the position of my work within it will be outlined. The domain (analytical reasoning) will be described and results from 3 studies will then be presented.
The first study examined a large corpus of `workscratchings' produced by subjects on paper.
A second study utilised a computer-based system, switchER1. The system administers analytical reasoning problems and provides a range of ER construction environments for the subject to choose and switch between.
A subsequent system, switchERII, incorporates a representation of the semantics of Euler's Circles, dynamically parses the user's representation and provides feedback and advice. The third study used switchERII to a) compare subjects' performance under conditions in which they interpreted presented representations and conditions in which they contructed their own representations and b) investigate the effects of system feedback upon ER construction accuracy.
The talk will conclude with a discussion of the roles of externalisation in reasoning with ERs.
