Abstract:
In this seminar I will explain what mixed-initiative is and how it is accounted for in 2 theories of human-human discourse. I will focus on how one theory in particular explains the mechanisms discourse participants use to seize and relinquish control in a conversation. I will talk about the benefits of mixed-initiative 'look and feel' in a human-machine interface. Finally I will describe three human-machine dialogue systems developed at BT Labs: 1) an entirely machine initiative system; 2) an entirely human initiative system and 3) a mixed-initiative system. .
