Abstract:

In this talk I'll tell you about some work I was involved in in Edinburgh a few years back on the automation of editorial assistance, and, in particular, in the automation of house style. The talk will be pretty open-ended and will take whatever direction the audience desires, but some things I may include are:

• some overview on the general ideas behind what we were trying to do and what we achieved
• a demo of a program that implements some of the ideas
• some stuff about grammar checking in a unification-based grammar framework
• some more general issues and discussion of grammar and style checking.
